Trademark reasons, not copyright. Mozilla own the Firefox trademark and have several restrictions on the use of the trademark by third-parties.

The restrictions are generally quite reasonable and understandable, but conflict with the needs of distributions incl. Debian to update and patch the code themselves. I would just like to leave the comment that the goals and policies of the debian project are just as reasonable and understandable as the mozilla foundation's restrictions on their trademark.

Neither party had unreasonable policies, yet there still seems to be a great amount of misunderstanding surrounding the issue. It was nothing more than a simple conflict that needed to be worked around to the satisfaction of both parties. But why is name "Firefox" still used, e. A few years later, Parabola and Connochaetos adopted the IceWeasel name and the Debian artwork for their browsers.

When Debian was using the name: IceWeasel, it was essentially just a re-branded Firefox. The feature-set was never any different from the Mozilla releases. That is, Debian did not disable or add any features; but some patches were applied occasionally. From the user's perspective, only the names and logos were different; but Mozilla considered those changes to a frozen version, to be outside of their trademark policy, requiring Debian to re-brand their browser.

In , Debian reached a reconciliation with Mozilla, concluding that the Debian modifications were not significant enough to require re-branding. So you just installed Iceweasel, but you are worried that some web site will not work because you are no longer running "Firefox"?

While it's true that the the word "Firefox" does not appear anywhere in the user agent string in Iceweasel though this may change in the future , most proper web sites don't care about the user agent, and the web site will Just Work TM. Here is a typical user agent sent by Iceweasel:. However, for that occasional web site that will only work under IE or "Firefox", there is a solution.

There is an extension that lets you change your user agent on-the-fly. Moreover, this site has provided a definition file that lets you browse as if you were on Firefox 2 for Windows XP.
